What is a sound bath?
*Also referred to as “Sound Therapy”
We all know from experience that sound has the power to move us. Perhaps you’ve noticed certain music affects your mood, the sound of rain helps you sleep, or discovered the rhythmic sounds of ocean waves bring you peace. The study of these experiences is called psychoacoustics.
Psychoacoustics is a branch of science relating to how humans perceive various sounds, and how those sounds may affect the mind and body. When acoustics are used to promote mental and physical wellness, the practice is known as sound therapy.
Sound therapy is based on principles of frequency, resonance and entrainment, bringing a physiological and neurological response in the brain and body.
Sound baths promotes a shift in our brainwaves by using external sound frequencies, creating something called entrainment; a method used to synchronize our fluctuating brainwaves to a stable frequency. The brain’s electrical response to this rhythmic sensory stimulation promotes a shift from our normal Beta state (awake and fully alert) to Alpha state (awake and relaxed) to Theta state (deep relaxation) and even the Delta state (deep sleep).
Our brain wave profile and our daily experience of the world are inseparable. While all of our brainwaves are necessary for optimal physical and mental function, too much activity of a specific brainwave relative to your brain’s normal range of activity can lead to corresponding problems (restlessness, anxiety, poor concentration, depression, learning disorders etc.). With modern society’s endless pressure created within our daily lives, we become consumed by our work, school, social media, parenting etc. This pressure keeps us in a state of fight-or-flight, rarely allowing our bodies to restore our genetic right to a calm, creative, and peaceful mind.
By using traditional sound therapy instruments, digital instruments and sound synthesis, ThetaBee focuses on the two most frequencies detected while practicing meditation, theta and alpha waves. These are the brainwave frequencies associated with creative thinking, deep relaxation, awareness, overall well-being and much more. Through self-regulation and self-assessment, we can see balance, coherence, and connectivity in the brain.
Alpha Waves
THE FLOW STATE
Alpha brainwaves are associated with a relaxed yet alert mental state that can be favorable for a variety of tasks and activities.
- Creativity: The activity of alpha waves in the brain can stimulate creative thinking and the development of new ideas. If your day requires innovative ideas and creative contributions, learning to be in an alpha state may help you operate more effectively. This is why people often get their best ideas when they are relaxed and not thinking too hard.
- Relaxation: Alpha waves are often present when a person is relaxed or in a state of calmness. Activities like sound therapy meditation can help increase alpha waves in the brain.
- Productivity: Alpha waves can help suppress distractions and irrelevant brain activity. As a result, improved mental processes and work performance can lead to better productivity.
- Learning & Memory Retention: Being in the alpha state can enhance your ability to absorb new information. Promoting an increase in learning capabilities and memory retention.
Theta Waves
DEEP RELAXATION
Theta brainwaves are associated with a state of deep relaxation and meditation that can be beneficial in many ways.
- Reduced levels of anxiety and stress: Activating theta waves and their capacity to achieve such a peaceful state can promote both short-term and long-term stress and anxiety reduction. Theta waves can also promote the regulation of cortisol levels within the body (stress hormones), which in turn lowers heightened stress and anxiety levels.
- Memory retrieval: Associated with memory retrieval and the ability to recall past experiences. This is why some people may experience vivid memories in the theta state.
- Subconscious: Our subconscious is where genuine authenticity lives, where we can connect with our inner world and discover the essence of who we are, what we desire, and what we need.
- Sleep: The first stages of sleep are characterized by theta waves, where the brain begins to relax and transition into sleep. Once asleep, theta waves are present during the REM cycle and are responsible for vivid dreaming before eventually shifting to the Delta state.

Why Headphones?
We highly recommend using headphones or earbuds for a more focused and concentrated listening experience.
Although some high quality speakers can provided a better ambient and expansive sound, the internal speakers on your mobile device or laptop won’t be able to properly output the desired audio as they will most likely cutout any mid-low frequencies.
Using headphones or earbuds can help to eliminate external distractions and create a more direct and intimate connection with the sound. It can also provide a more personalized experience as the sound is delivered directly into the ears, which can enhance the perception of the frequencies’ effects.
Can I use external speakers?
If you must use speakers because of oversensitive hearing we suggest using a quality external speaker system with two or more channels (left and right). However, using speakers will limit the listening experience when binaural beats are being utilized. Because binaural beats result from distinct tones being sent to each ear, you need to listen to these recordings on headphones.
